Sports Betting in New Jersey
In May of 2018, New Jersey won a U.S. Supreme Court case clearing the way for all 50 states to offer sports betting, should they choose to do so. On June 11, 2018 New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed legal sports gambling into law.
Borgata was the first Atlantic City casino to offer sports betting on June 14, 2018. Ocean Casino Resort was the second casino to have a sports book when the property opened June 27, 2018. On July 30, 2018, Wild Wild West Casino inside Bally’s Atlantic City opened a sports book, followed by Harrah’s on August 1. The Golden Nugget and Resorts soon followed with their own sports books on August 15.
Resorts, in cooperation with its sports book partner DraftKings, was the first Atlantic City casino to offer legalized online and mobile sports betting in New Jersey, having launched the platform on August 6, 2018. There are now five other companies offering mobile sports betting including Caesars, MGM, Sugar House, Fan Duel and William Hill.
Internet Gaming in New Jersey
New Jersey became the third state in the country to permit gambling online. Legislation allows casinos operating in Atlantic City to offer games of chance online to gamblers within the state’s borders. This marks the biggest expansion of gambling since Atlantic City welcomed gaming into the seaside resort in 1978. Written into the law is a 15% tax on the casinos’ online winnings as well as rules to stem compulsive gambling. Six Atlantic City sites are currently authorized by state regulators for online gaming.
